Arif Fauzan Othman’s 2012 solo exhibition, Sublime Images, hosted at Arti Gallery, showcases his mastery of large-scale acrylic on canvas. Moving beyond specific cultural or racial identities, Arif focuses on the universal human figure, frequently emphasizing themes of strength and masculinity, alongside nostalgic everyday landscapes.
A defining feature of his creative process is his exclusive use of personal photographs as foundational references for his artwork. His painting technique is characterized by a striking, deliberate contrast: he renders his central subjects with solid, imposing detail, while surrounding them with chaotic, "grimy" brushstrokes at the outer edges of the canvas. These textured, noisy backgrounds serve as a metaphor for the distracting clamor of the urban environment. However, these messy borders are carefully contained so they never intrude upon the clear, resilient core of his subjects, ultimately producing the profound "sublime images" of the exhibition's title.
