Blackzephyr

Year: 2017 Medium: Oil, acrylic, graphite, encaustic Location: G13, Kuala Lumpur

Arif Fauzan’s Black Zephyr explores how mainstream media breeds societal misconceptions, turning information into an epidemic that demonizes figures and distorts judgment on religion, politics, and culture. Using monotonous earth tones and iron oxide pigments, Arif blends figuration with abstraction, revisiting techniques from his earlier work. Recurring female subjects dance organically, draped in flailing cashmere, inviting open interpretation. The artist’s hands-on process and fascination with vintage photography underscore themes of limitation and authenticity. Ultimately, Black Zephyr poses a vital question—whether this “zephyr” is a bad omen or a misconstrued idea—framing Arif as a smart pessimist navigating 21st-century chaos.
